Colleformica
About us

Our story
Guardians of a Family Tradition for Over a Century
Since the late 1800s, we have been custodians of a small plot of land in Colle Formica, Velletri, 45 km south of Rome. We are in the Castelli Romani, a volcanic area with rich soils, one of the world’s most suitable areas for viticulture, where wine has been produced for 2,500 years.
Winemaking, passed down from generation to generation with patience, hard work, and love, led us to begin bottling our own wine with the 2018 harvest, produced exclusively from grapes grown in our vineyards.
Sergio and Maria, supported by their children, grandchildren, and the entire family, renovated and equipped the old cellar to begin this wonderful adventure.
Three hectares of land in total, two dedicated to vineyards, with the oldest vines over 45 years old. Malvasia di Candia and Trebbiano for the white grapes, Primitivo and Sangiovese for the red grapes. The remaining hectare is planted with olive groves, fruit trees, and a seasonal vegetable garden.
Our philosophy
Respect the land, minimal intervention possible
The vineyards are located at approximately 200 meters above sea level, beneath the slopes of the Lazio Volcano (active up to 36,000 years ago). We are 25 km from the Tyrrhenian Sea and 20 km from the Lepini Mountains. We let the vines grow naturally, without fertilizing or weeding, only applying necessary sulfur and copper treatments.
Our work in the vineyard is enormous. All the work is done by hand, from pruning to tying, from suckering to harvesting. If healthy grapes are brought to the cellar, most of the work is done. We believe that wine is made in the vineyard!!!
Only the best bunches of our grapes enter the cellar, allowing a minimalist approach to transforming grapes into wine.
Fermentation occurs naturally with only indigenous yeasts. We do not filter, clarify, or control the temperature. We follow the lunar phases for racking and bottling.
Wine is a living food that nourishes body and soul. Every year is different, every vintage is unique.
With every passing season, every harvest, every bottled wine, every walk in the vineyard, every work in the cellar, we learn something new to put to use on this extraordinary journey.

our wines
Volcanic passion, authentic wines
We produce:
- Three white wines (Biancofiore, Formica Gialla e Arancia Atomica),
- Two red wines (Formica Rossa e Primativo),
- Two refermented wines (Formica Pazza Gialla e Formica Pazza Rosè).
Our wines are the authentic expression of local wines. The Castelli Romani and wine are inextricably linked. The rich volcanic soil makes our life easy. We are in one of the best areas on Earth for winemaking and agriculture in general.
The combination of our extremely fertile land and our minimal intervention philosophy gives us unique and vibrant wines, different every year.
All the vineyards are trained using a system known locally as Tendone (or Pergola). The grape varieties used are among the classic Castelli Romani ones: Malvasia di Candia and Trebbiano for the white wines (from vines between 35 and 45 years old), Sangiovese (from 20-year-old vines) and Primitivo (planted in 2017) for the reds and rosés.
Primitivo may seem strange in the Castelli Romani, but it was a grape variety present until after the Second World War. A Primitivo that is more delicate and drinkable than the Apulian variety.
